CSS Pakistan: A Realistic Prep Plan for the Country's Hardest Exam
May 9, 2026 · 7 min · CSS Pakistan · CSS exam prep · Pakistan civil services
The CSS in Pakistan has a pass rate under 3%. Most aspirants fail the written paper. The students who clear share four habits.
Understanding the format
- Compulsory papers: Essay, English Precis, Pakistan Affairs, Islamiat, GK
- Optional papers: 6 papers from a long list, totaling 600 marks
- Interview at the end for those who clear written
What separates pass from fail
- Essay quality — many candidates get below the qualifying mark on Essay alone
- English precis — translation and summary skills, often underprepped
- Pakistan Affairs depth — most candidates know facts but can't analyse
- Optional subject choice — pick something you actually understand
The Essay paper
Worth 100 marks. Many candidates fail this one paper.
- Pick the topic carefully (no scoring breakdown is given for the wrong topic)
- Outline before writing (10 minutes minimum)
- 2500-3000 words is the sweet spot
- Examples and references count
- Practice 30+ essays over the year
Use Essay Coach for outline help and feedback.
The English Precis paper
- Read the passage three times
- Identify the central thesis
- Write a summary that's one-third the original length
- Maintain the original tone
- Translate the Urdu passage carefully
Optional subject choice
Top choices for high markers:
- Pakistan Affairs (compulsory anyway)
- Islamic History
- International Relations
- Sociology
- Public Administration
Avoid: Maths, Statistics, Physics — they have lower scoring averages.
A 12-month plan
- Months 1-3: NCERT and Pakistan studies foundation
- Months 4-6: optional subjects deep dive
- Months 7-9: essay and precis daily practice
- Months 10-11: full-length mock papers
- Month 12: revision only
Common pitfalls
- Joining coaching academies that promise easy success
- Memorising sample essays (examiners spot them)
- Skipping current affairs
- Not practicing under timed conditions
- Studying alone without any feedback loop
Mental health note
CSS prep takes a year minimum and is brutally lonely. Build a small group of 2-3 serious peers. Avoid large WhatsApp groups (they're noise).
