Natural Selection and Evolution: How to Explain It for Marks

Quick answer: Natural selection is the process where individuals whose inherited variation happens to suit their environment survive, reproduce, and pass on the alleles for that variation — so across many generations the whole population changes. In the exam you win the marks by writing the chain in order: variation exists, it is genetic, there is a selection pressure, the best-suited individuals survive and breed, they pass on the useful alleles, and the frequency of that allele rises over generations. The first natural-selection answer I ever handed in got 3 out of 6, and I genuinely couldn't see why. My biology wasn't wrong. I'd written the feeling of evolution instead of the chain examiners tick, and one lazy phrase — "the moths adapted so they could survive" — threw away two marks on its own. This is the classic topic where the science is easy and the marks live entirely in the wording. Written as a chain, it becomes one of the most reliable 6-markers on the paper, whether you sit CBSE, GCSE (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level, or AP Biology.
Variation comes first — that is the whole game
Before anything selects, adapts or survives, there has to be variation in the population. Some bacteria in a colony differ slightly from the rest; some rabbits are a little faster; some plants are a shade taller. That variation is caused by mutation, which produces new alleles (different versions of a gene). The single most important idea — and the source of nearly every misconception — is that this variation is random and already present before the environment ever changes.
The environment does not create the useful feature. It cannot "tell" a bacterium to become resistant. All it does is decide which of the existing variations get to survive and breed. Get that one idea straight and half the marks look after themselves.
The mark-scheme chain examiners actually tick
Almost every board marks a natural-selection explanation as a chain of linked points, and each link is worth a mark. Miss a link and you lose that mark even if the rest is perfect. Here is the chain, in the order examiners want it:
- There is variation within the population.
- The variation is genetic — caused by mutation, giving different alleles.
- There is a selection pressure — competition for food, a predator, a disease, a drug, a change in the environment.
- Individuals with the advantageous allele are more likely to survive and reach breeding age.
- Survivors reproduce and pass the advantageous allele on to their offspring.
- Over many generations the frequency of that allele increases in the population.
That is the lot. AQA even hands you a definition of evolution worth memorising word for word: a change in the inherited characteristics of a population over time, through natural selection, which may result in the formation of a new species.
"Survival of the fittest" does not mean the strongest
This phrase loses more marks than almost any other. "Fittest" does not mean strongest, fastest or biggest. It means best suited to the environment, measured by one thing only: how many surviving offspring you leave. AP Biology says it outright — fitness is reproductive success. A small, dull, slow organism that leaves more offspring is fitter than a spectacular one that leaves none.
Worked example — a 6-mark answer, done properly
Explain how a population of bacteria can become resistant to an antibiotic. (6 marks)
- Step 1 (variation): Within the bacterial population there is genetic variation, and by chance a few bacteria carry a mutation. (1 mark)
- Step 2 (source): This mutation arose randomly and was present before the antibiotic was used — the antibiotic did not cause it. (1 mark)
- Step 3 (advantage and selection pressure): The mutation makes those bacteria resistant. When the antibiotic is applied it acts as the selection pressure: it kills the non-resistant bacteria. (1 mark)
- Step 4 (survival): The resistant bacteria survive because they are not killed. (1 mark)
- Step 5 (reproduction): These survivors reproduce — bacteria divide rapidly — passing the resistance allele to their offspring. (1 mark)
- Step 6 (generations): Over many generations the proportion of resistant bacteria increases, so the whole population becomes resistant. (1 mark)
Notice there is no "the bacteria wanted to survive" and no "the antibiotic made them resistant" anywhere. Every sentence is a tickable link. The evidence you can quote
Boards love asking for evidence that evolution happens, so keep two or three examples ready:
- Antibiotic resistance — evolution you can actually watch, in years not millennia. Cambridge IGCSE uses MRSA (resistant Staphylococcus) as its worked case, and it is the strongest "here and now" proof you can give.
- The fossil record — fossils in older rock layers are simpler than those in newer layers, showing gradual change over time, plus transitional fossils linking one group to another.
- Comparative anatomy and DNA — AP Biology especially rewards homologous structures (the same pentadactyl limb bones in humans, whales and bats) and molecular evidence, where more closely related species share more similar DNA.
The phrases that quietly lose you marks
- "The organism chose, wanted, tried or needed to adapt." Teleology — an instant mark loss. Variation is random; nothing chooses.
- "The individual evolved." Individuals do not evolve; populations do. One giraffe never grows a longer neck — the average neck length of the population shifts across generations.
- "The environment made them resistant." The environment selects; it does not create the mutation.
- Lamarck's error: acquired characteristics are not inherited. A weightlifter's muscles are never passed on — only the alleles in the gametes are.
Test yourself
- A field is sprayed with weedkiller. A few weeds survive and, years later, the whole field is full of resistant weeds. Name the selection pressure and explain in one sentence why the survivors are resistant.
- True or false: "The weedkiller caused the weeds to become resistant." Correct the statement.

What is the difference between natural selection and evolution?
Natural selection is the mechanism — the filtering of variation by the environment. Evolution is the result — the change in a population's inherited characteristics over time. Selection is the engine; evolution is the journey it drives.
Is "survival of the fittest" the same as natural selection?
Close, but it is only part of it, and it is easily misread. Natural selection needs both survival and reproduction — surviving is useless for evolution if you leave no offspring to inherit your alleles.
Do mutations happen because an organism needs them?
