CBSE Class 10 Two Board Exams: How the Second Exam Works
Since 2026, CBSE Class 10 has two board exams a year. The first, the main exam from mid-February, is compulsory for every student (the scheme makes exceptions only for winter-bound schools). The second, in May, is a chance to improve your performance in up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages, and students with a compartment result can use it as their compartment attempt. The better of the two performances counts. A student who misses three or more subjects in the main exam cannot sit the second exam and is placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ category. In 2026 the main exam ran from 17 February to 11 March, the second from 15 to 21 May, and the second exam's results came on 18 July. CBSE had not published the 2027 date sheet when this page was checked on 19 September 2026.
The two-exam system is new, and a lot of what circulates about it — on WhatsApp, on coaching sites, even from well-meaning seniors — is guesswork. This page sticks to what CBSE itself has put in writing: the scheme notified in June 2025, the clarification issued on 14 February 2026, and CBSE's press release on the 2026 second-exam results. The main exam is compulsory — the second is not a backup
CBSE's clarification of 14 February 2026 is blunt: it is mandatory for all students to appear in the first board exam. It was written because students who could not sit the main exam asked to take only the second one, and CBSE said no. If a student does not appear in three or more subjects in the main exam, they are not allowed to sit the second exam; they are placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ category and can take the exam only in the main exam the following February. CBSE added that it will not respond to requests on this point. CBSE's scheme does name three special cases: sports students may sit the second exam in subjects whose papers clashed with their sports event, students at winter-bound schools may choose either exam, and the facilities given to CWSN candidates apply in the second exam as well. Beyond those, the rules spell out the three-subject line only, so if illness or an emergency makes you miss any paper, talk to your school straight away.
Who can sit the second exam
CBSE lists four ways in. First, improvement: students who passed can try to improve in up to three main subjects, chosen from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. Second, compartment: a student whose main-exam result is compartment can appear in the second exam under the compartment category. Third, compartment and improvement together. Fourth, improvement for students who passed through the replacement of a subject. Two things are not allowed: taking an additional subject after passing Class 10, and appearing in stand-alone subjects. Both exams are on the full syllabus, so there is no lighter version in May.
Which mark counts
For regular students, CBSE's wording in its 2026 results announcement is that ‘the better of the two performances is considered’ for the final result. Read plainly, a second attempt that goes worse should not pull your result down — but the second exam is still a full board exam that needs real preparation, not a free lottery ticket. Under the scheme, requests for photocopies of answer books, verification and re-evaluation come after the second exam's results rather than after the main exam, and the passing certificate and any merit certificate are issued after the second exam too. Class 11 admission works the other way round from what many people assume: provisional admission is for students who did NOT qualify in the main exam, and is confirmed on the second exam's result. If you passed the main exam and do not want to sit the second one, CBSE says your main-exam performance on DigiLocker can be used for Class 11 admission.
What the first year, 2026, actually showed
The 2026 main exam ran from 17 February to 11 March, and the second exam from 15 to 21 May. The scheme had said the second results would come in June; they were declared on 18 July 2026, on DigiLocker at results.digilocker.gov.in. CBSE's figures: 6,64,027 students registered for the second exam. Of the 5,13,955 who sat it to improve, 3,08,095 — 59.95% — did better than in the main exam. Of the 1,49,822 who sat it in the compartment category, 78,503 passed, 52.40%. After combining both exams, the overall pass percentage was 96.78%. The honest lesson: about six in ten improvers improved, and about four in ten did not. The second exam is a real chance, not a guarantee.
What is known about 2027, and what is not
When this page was checked on 19 September 2026, CBSE had not published the 2027 date sheet. The most recent notice about the 2026-27 Class 10 exams was a prior intimation, dated 10 September 2026, about the List of Candidates (LOC) for the 2026-27 Class 10 and 12 exams — the list your school submits with your name, subjects and details, so check yours carefully when your school asks. For 2026, CBSE released a tentative date sheet on 24 September 2025, but that is a pattern, not a promise. The scheme itself says the main exam begins from mid-February and the second exam is held in May. How to use two chances without wasting either
Prepare for February as if it were the only exam. The main exam is compulsory, its result is the one Class 11 admission normally runs on, and a student who does well in it has nothing to fix in May. If a subject goes badly, choose improvement subjects on evidence — the marks you actually got and how far each is from the score you need — not on panic, and remember that the limit is three. The gap between March and May is short, and the second exam covers the full syllabus, so start fixing weak chapters as soon as the main exam ends rather than waiting for results. And keep your school in the loop at every step: the LOC, the second-exam registration and any compartment arrangements all go through them.
