A Level — AQA Biology help — done properly
AQA A Level Biology (7402) is famously content-dense. 8 topics across Year 12 and 13. The 25-mark essay on Paper 3 is what kills most students' overall grade — it's worth ~10% of the total qualification on its own.
Exam format you'll actually sit
Three papers, 2h each, 91-78 marks. Paper 1: topics 1-4 (biological molecules, cells, organisms exchange substances, genetic information). Paper 2: topics 5-8. Paper 3: synoptic + 25-mark essay choice.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Enzymes: induced fit + factors affecting activity
- DNA, RNA, protein synthesis (transcription + translation)
- Membrane transport: diffusion, osmosis, active transport, co-transport
- Mass transport in animals (heart + circulation) and plants (xylem + phloem)
- Genetic diversity + natural selection (Hardy-Weinberg)
- Photosynthesis + respiration (full biochemistry)
- Nervous coordination (action potentials + synapses)
- Gene technology (PCR, gel electrophoresis, recombinant DNA)
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Confusing 'because' vs 'so' — biology mark schemes care about cause-effect direction
- Vague 'damages cells' answers — say HOW (e.g. denatures enzymes, ruptures membranes)
- Photosynthesis: not stating the location (chloroplast vs stroma vs thylakoid)
- Genetics: not stating gamete combinations explicitly
- Synoptic essay: picking 5 unrelated topics — you need a unifying theme
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
