GCSE — AQA Biology help — done properly
AQA GCSE Biology (8461) is six topics on Paper 1 and six on Paper 2. The trick is that 'required practicals' (10 of them) appear in every paper as 6-mark questions. Memorise the practical method exactly and you've got an easy 12+ marks.
Exam format you'll actually sit
Two papers, 1h 45 each, 100 marks each. Paper 1: cell biology, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics. Paper 2: homeostasis, inheritance, variation, evolution, ecology.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Required practical: enzyme activity (effect of pH or temperature)
- Required practical: osmosis with potato cylinders
- Required practical: photosynthesis with pondweed
- Inheritance: monohybrid Punnett squares + sex inheritance
- Homeostasis: blood glucose regulation (insulin / glucagon)
- Nervous system: reflex arc diagram + labels
- Plant transport: xylem and phloem structure + function
- Pyramids of biomass and energy flow through ecosystems
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Required practical questions: writing the method out of order — markers want sequential steps
- Genetic cross: forgetting to state genotype AND phenotype
- Confusing meiosis and mitosis stages
- Using 'germs' instead of 'pathogens'
- Photosynthesis equation missing the light arrow
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
