Advanced Placement (AP) Biology help — done properly
AP Biology is one of the harder AP exams. The 8-unit framework means you can't cram — start in September and pace yourself. The key skill examiners reward is connecting concepts across units (e.g. how cell signaling intersects with immune response).
Exam format you'll actually sit
60 MCQ (90 min, 50% score) + 6 FRQs (90 min, 50% score). Scored 1-5.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Cell communication and cell cycle
- Genetics: Mendelian + non-Mendelian inheritance
- Gene expression and regulation (operons)
- Cellular energetics (photosynthesis + cellular respiration in detail)
- Heredity and natural selection (Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium)
- Ecology: population dynamics + ecosystem energy flow
- Lab investigations (BLAST, transformation, photosynthesis)
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- FRQ: not justifying with biological reasoning
- Confusing meiosis stages with mitosis stages
- Hardy-Weinberg: not stating conditions
- Lab questions: forgetting the control
- Vague language ('the cell does something') instead of specific mechanisms
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.

Realistic study plan
Sept-Nov: units 1-4. Dec-Feb: units 5-8. Mar-April: FRQ practice + labs. May: full exams + targeted revision.
