CBSE Chemistry help — done properly

CBSE Chemistry is three subjects in one: Physical Chemistry rewards math, Organic Chemistry rewards mechanism memorisation, and Inorganic Chemistry rewards recall. Most students drop marks in Inorganic because they don't realise how much memorisation it needs.

Exam format you'll actually sit

Class 12 Chemistry: 70-mark theory + 30-mark practical. Theory in 3 hours, similar 5-section structure to Biology. Class 11 is the foundation but isn't directly examined in CBSE board (only at school level).

Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)

  • Solutions (molarity, molality, colligative properties) — Class 12 Section D
  • Electrochemistry (Nernst equation, cell potentials) — every paper
  • Chemical kinetics (rate laws, half-life) — Class 12 standard
  • Coordination compounds (Werner's theory, isomerism) — Inorganic favourite
  • p-block and d-block element trends
  • Alcohols, phenols, ethers (mechanism + reactions) — Organic Section C
  • Aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids — Organic Section D
  • Amines and biomolecules — at least one short question

Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.

Common mistakes that quietly cost marks

  • Mixing up molarity and molality formulas — molarity = moles/L, molality = moles/kg
  • Forgetting to balance redox half-reactions before adding them
  • Drawing organic mechanisms without arrows for electron movement
  • Using Markovnikov's rule when the question is about peroxide effect
  • Forgetting that Le Chatelier's principle works on both sides of equilibrium

When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.

Where to get real past papers

  • cbse.gov.in sample papers
  • Oswaal CBSE Chemistry Question Bank
  • P. Bahadur Physical Chemistry, M.S. Chouhan Organic — for harder practice

Realistic study plan

Allocate weeks by topic difficulty: Physical 30%, Organic 40%, Inorganic 30%. Inorganic needs daily 20 min revision because it's pure memorisation.
