Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry help — done properly
AP Chemistry is calculation-heavy. The Equation Sheet given in the exam saves you memorisation, but you still need to know WHICH equation to apply and when. The 'big four' calculation topics are equilibrium, acids/bases, kinetics, and electrochemistry.
Exam format you'll actually sit
60 MCQ (90 min, 50%) + 7 FRQs (105 min, 50%). Scored 1-5.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Equilibrium (Kc, Kp, Le Chatelier, ICE tables)
- Acids and bases (Henderson-Hasselbalch, buffers, titration curves)
- Kinetics (rate laws, integrated rate laws, mechanisms)
- Electrochemistry (cell potentials, Nernst equation, electrolysis)
- Thermodynamics (ΔG = ΔH - TΔS, spontaneity)
- Atomic structure (PES, photoelectric effect, electronic configuration)
- Intermolecular forces (hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, London)
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Mixing Ka and pKa in buffer calculations
- Forgetting that 'x' in ICE tables is small only when initial concentrations are >> Ka
- Sign errors in electrochemistry (oxidation = negative E°)
- Thermodynamics: forgetting to convert J to kJ before using ΔG = ΔH - TΔS
- PES: misidentifying which subshell each peak represents
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
