GCSE — AQA English help — done properly
AQA GCSE English is two qualifications: Language (8700) tests reading and writing skills on unseen texts. Literature (8702) tests set texts — typically Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, and the Power & Conflict anthology. Memorising the right quotes is what separates grades 6 from 9.
Exam format you'll actually sit
Language: two papers, 1h 45 each. Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading + Writing. Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints + Perspectives. Literature: two papers. Paper 1: Shakespeare + 19th century novel. Paper 2: modern text + poetry anthology + unseen poetry.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Language Paper 1 Q3: structural analysis of an extract
- Language Paper 1 Q5: descriptive or narrative writing (40 marks!)
- Literature: Macbeth — ambition, guilt, supernatural themes
- Literature: A Christmas Carol — redemption, social criticism, Scrooge's transformation
- Literature: An Inspector Calls — responsibility, class, J.B. Priestley's socialist message
- Literature: Power & Conflict poetry comparison
- Unseen poetry analysis (using PEEL or PETAL structure)
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Language Q5: writing too short — aim for 1.5 to 2 pages minimum
- Quoting without analysing — every quote needs a 'this shows...'
- Forgetting context paragraph on the modern text question
- Unseen poetry: jumping to themes before language devices
- Spelling, punctuation, grammar marks lost in creative writing
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
