JEE Main / Advanced prep Mathematics help — done properly
JEE Mathematics rewards speed and pattern recognition. The same 8-10 problem archetypes repeat every year — calculus optimisation, definite integral with trig, conic sections, probability with Bayes, complex numbers locus, etc. Once you can recognise the archetype in 5 seconds, half the question is done.
Exam format you'll actually sit
JEE Mains: 25 math questions per paper (20 MCQ + 5 numerical answer type). 1 hour for math section. Negative marking on MCQs. JEE Advanced: more questions, multiple-correct types, integer types.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Definite integrals with substitution + symmetry properties
- Application of derivatives — maxima/minima word problems
- Conic sections — parabola, ellipse, hyperbola standard problems
- Complex numbers — locus problems on the Argand plane
- Permutations and combinations + binomial theorem
- Probability — Bayes' theorem, conditional probability
- Matrices and determinants
- Sequences and series — sum of GP, AGP
- 3D geometry — line and plane intersections
- Trigonometric equations and inverse trig
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Wasting 5+ minutes on a single problem when you should move on
- Mis-reading the question — JEE loves 'least' vs 'greatest' switcheroos
- Forgetting domain restrictions in inverse trig
- Sign errors in conic section equations
- Negative marking on guesses — only answer if 50%+ sure
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
Where to get real past papers
- Official JEE archive on jeemain.nta.nic.in
- JEE Main 10 Years' Solved Papers (Arihant)
- Cengage IIT-JEE Mathematics series for depth
- ML Khanna for the harder problems
Realistic study plan
JEE Main is 60% NCERT-level. Master NCERT first. Then Cengage for depth. Finally PYQs (last 12 years). Take 1 mock per week from month 3 onwards.
