Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics help — done properly
Cambridge IGCSE Maths (0580 traditional and 0980 9-1 grading) is sat in 130+ countries. The Extended tier is the standard for top universities. Cambridge mark schemes are unusually specific — knowing which words score is half the battle.
Exam format you'll actually sit
Paper 1 (Core, 1h, 56 marks, non-calc): short answer. Paper 2 (Extended, 1h 30, 70 marks, non-calc): short answer. Paper 3 (Core, 2h, 104 marks, calc): structured. Paper 4 (Extended, 2h 30, 130 marks, calc): structured.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Set notation + Venn diagrams (always asked)
- Sequences (linear, quadratic, geometric, special)
- Functions: f(x), f⁻¹(x), fg(x), gf(x)
- Coordinate geometry: gradient, midpoint, parallel/perpendicular lines
- Vectors: column vectors + vector geometry
- Probability: tree diagrams + conditional
- Statistics: cumulative frequency curves + box plots
- Trigonometry: sine rule, cosine rule, area of triangle
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Vectors: not stating that two vectors are parallel using a scalar multiple
- Functions: f(g(x)) order — read right to left
- Cumulative frequency: reading the curve at the wrong y-value
- Trigonometric: degrees vs radians (Extended assumes degrees)
- Bounds: confusing upper/lower bound subtraction direction
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.

Realistic study plan
Identify Core vs Extended early. Extended students: solve papers 2 + 4 from last 10 years. Core: papers 1 + 3.
