A Level — Edexcel (Pearson) Mathematics help — done properly

Edexcel A Level Maths (9MA0) has the same content as AQA but slightly different question styles. Edexcel is known for cleaner numbers in calculations but tougher 'show that' proof questions. Mark schemes are very specific on which method gets marks.

Exam format you'll actually sit

Three papers, 2h each, 100 marks each. Papers 1 & 2: Pure. Paper 3: Statistics (50 marks) + Mechanics (50 marks). All calculator-allowed.

Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)

  • Vectors in 2D and 3D — magnitude, direction, dot product
  • Differentiation from first principles (worth showing fully)
  • Logarithms + exponentials + their differentiation
  • Numerical integration: trapezium rule + Simpson's rule
  • Statistics: regression, correlation, hypothesis testing on r
  • Mechanics: connected particles (pulley, inclined plane)
  • Moments and equilibrium (rigid bodies)

Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.

Common mistakes that quietly cost marks

  • Vector questions: confusing position vectors with direction vectors
  • Differentiation from first principles: not showing the limit clearly
  • Trapezium rule: getting the h wrong (h = (b-a)/n)
  • Stats: testing the wrong tail (one-tail vs two-tail)
  • Mechanics: forgetting to resolve forces along the incline

When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
