GCSE — Edexcel (Pearson) Mathematics help — done properly
Edexcel GCSE Maths (1MA1) is the most-sat maths qualification in the UK. The exam papers are very predictable — Pearson re-uses question types year after year. If you've done the last 5 years of papers, you've effectively seen 80% of the question patterns.
Exam format you'll actually sit
Three papers, 1h 30 each, 80 marks each (240 total). Paper 1 non-calculator, Papers 2 & 3 calculator. Same structure as AQA but with Edexcel-specific question styles.
Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)
- Bearings (always appears, calculator paper)
- Surds: rationalising the denominator — Higher
- Compound shapes area + volume (frustum, sphere)
- Stem-and-leaf, cumulative frequency, box plots
- Standard form arithmetic (×, ÷, +, −)
- Solving quadratic by formula AND by completing the square
- Inverse functions + composite functions — Higher
- Exponential growth and decay word problems
Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.
Common mistakes that quietly cost marks
- Bearings: not measuring from North clockwise
- Surds: leaving an irrational in the denominator
- Stem-and-leaf: forgetting the key
- Standard form: putting the decimal in the wrong place
- Functions: f(g(x)) order vs g(f(x))
When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
