CBSE Physics help — done properly

CBSE Physics looks scary but has the cleanest pattern of any subject. Every paper has: one derivation per section (electromagnetism, optics, modern), one numerical per section, and a few short-answer questions. Memorise 20 derivations and you've covered ~30 marks.

Exam format you'll actually sit

Class 12 Physics: 70-mark theory + 30-mark practical. Theory 3 hours, 5 sections. Class 11 not directly board-examined.

Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)

  • Electrostatics: Gauss's law applications + capacitor combinations
  • Current electricity: Kirchhoff's laws + Wheatstone bridge derivation
  • Magnetic effects of current + magnetism (Biot-Savart law applications)
  • Electromagnetic induction: Faraday's law + Lenz's law derivations
  • AC circuits + LC oscillations
  • Ray and wave optics: lens formula derivation, Young's double slit
  • Modern physics: photoelectric effect, hydrogen spectrum, de Broglie
  • Atoms and nuclei: binding energy, mass defect, radioactive decay

Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.

Common mistakes that quietly cost marks

  • Stating laws without giving their mathematical form
  • Using cm in some places and m in others within the same problem
  • Forgetting sign conventions in ray optics (the New Cartesian convention)
  • Calculating without the unit, then attaching it at the end (wrong)
  • Forgetting that EMF and potential difference are different concepts

When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.

Where to get real past papers

  • cbse.gov.in sample papers
  • Oswaal CBSE Physics Question Bank
  • H.C. Verma Concepts of Physics — for conceptual depth
  • DC Pandey for JEE-aligned practice

Realistic study plan

Derivations first — print or write out all 20 standard ones. Drill them weekly. Then numericals by chapter. Final month: PYPs only.
