Advanced Placement (AP) Physics help — done properly

AP Physics splits into algebra-based (Physics 1 + 2) and calculus-based (Physics C: Mechanics + E&M). Physics 1 is the most-failed AP exam — partly because students underestimate it. C: E&M is the hardest by far but the curve is generous.

Exam format you'll actually sit

Physics 1 & 2: 50 MCQ + 5 FRQs, 3h. Physics C: Mech: 35 MCQ + 3 FRQs, 1h 30. Physics C: E&M: same. All scored 1-5.

Highest-yield topics (the ones that show up year after year)

  • Kinematics (1D and 2D motion, projectiles)
  • Newton's laws + free body diagrams
  • Energy and momentum conservation
  • Rotational motion + torque (Physics 1 + C)
  • Simple harmonic motion + waves
  • Electrostatics + circuits (Physics 1 + 2)
  • Magnetism + electromagnetic induction (Physics 2 + C: E&M)
  • Calculus: Gauss's law, Ampere's law (Physics C: E&M only)

Drill these first. If you can't do every one of these cold, work through them with /explain or /problem-variants.

Common mistakes that quietly cost marks

  • FRQ: forgetting to draw a free body diagram even when not explicitly asked
  • Confusing average velocity with instantaneous velocity
  • Forgetting that g points downward (negative if up is positive)
  • Physics C: E&M: surface integrals direction errors
  • Lab questions: not identifying systematic vs random error

When you mark your past papers, tag each lost mark to one of these. The pattern reveals where to focus.
