Read the verb, not the topic
The single biggest FRQ upgrade is boring: read the task verb first and answer that. Each verb is defined by College Board, and each asks for a different amount of work.
- Identify / State — name the thing. No explanation. One clause is enough.
- Describe — give the relevant characteristics or the trend. What is happening, not why.
- Explain — say how or why, using reasoning. This is where the mechanism lives.
- Justify — make a claim, then back it with evidence and reasoning that connects the two.
- Predict — state what will happen (a direction), grounded in a biological principle.
- Calculate — show the setup, substitute the numbers, and label units.
Here's the trap: say "identify" and write a whole mechanism, and you've burned three minutes for the same one point. Say "justify" and only state a claim, and you've earned nothing. The verb tells you exactly how much to write. Matching it is free marks.
How the points actually work
AP Bio FRQs are positively scored. You earn points; you don't lose them for extra harmless detail. Each rubric point is a discrete, pre-written checkbox — "1 point for identifying the independent variable" — and the reader scans your answer for that exact idea. Two consequences most students never internalise:
- You cannot earn a point you didn't attempt. Skipping the "justify" half of a predict-and-justify question forfeits that point, however good your prediction is.
- A contradiction can cancel a point. Write the right idea, then flatly contradict it, and a reader can decline the point. Don't hedge both ways to feel safe — commit.
Justify = claim + evidence + reasoning
"Justify" is the verb students fumble most, because in normal English it just means "give a reason." On an AP rubric it means three moves: a claim (your answer), evidence (a specific data point or observation — quote the actual numbers), and reasoning (the biology that makes the evidence support the claim).
The classic failure is restating the claim in different words. "The rate is higher because it is faster" earns nothing. "The rate is higher — O2 use rose from 0.05 to 0.08 mL/min — because warmer temperatures raise kinetic energy, so enzymes and substrates collide more often" earns the point, because evidence and reasoning are both there.
Predict = a direction plus the biology
A prediction is a claim about an outcome you weren't given, built on a principle you were taught. Two things make it score: a direction (higher/lower, binds/doesn't bind — "it will change" is not a prediction), and an anchor to a mechanism, not a guess. Most predict questions are followed by "...and justify your prediction," so treat predict-and-justify as one answer: state the direction, then explain the biology that forces it.
A fully worked mini-answer
Here's a respirometer question in the AP style. Scientists measure oxygen consumption by germinating pea seeds at three temperatures:
- 10 °C — 0.02 mL O2 per minute
- 25 °C — 0.05 mL O2 per minute
- 40 °C — 0.08 mL O2 per minute
Part (c): The enzymes catalysing respiration are proteins. Predict the rate of O2 consumption at 55 °C compared with 25 °C, and justify your prediction. (2 points)
Step 1 — Decode the verbs. This is predict (1 point for a directional claim) plus justify (1 point for evidence-plus-reasoning). Two boxes to tick.
Step 2 — State the direction. At 55 °C, O2 consumption will be lower than at 25 °C. (That's the prediction point — notice it's a direction, not "it changes.")
Step 3 — Give the mechanism. At 55 °C the respiration enzymes denature: high temperature breaks the bonds holding tertiary structure, so the active site changes shape. Substrate can no longer bind, fewer enzyme-substrate complexes form, and the reactions that consume O2 slow down.
Step 4 — Check the link. The reasoning must reach the measured variable — I said fewer complexes means less O2 used, not just "enzymes denature." That connection is the point.
Compare a weak answer — "It'll be lower because 55 °C is too hot" (direction fine, but no mechanism) — with the full-mark version: "Lower than at 25 °C, because the enzymes denature, the active site changes shape, substrate can't bind, so fewer respiration reactions occur and less O2 is consumed." Same biology; one earns double because it names the mechanism and lands it on the measured variable.
The five ways students throw away points
- Answering the topic, not the verb — a full mechanism when it only said "describe the trend."
- Justifying without data — quote the numbers. "It increased" is weaker than "it rose from 0.05 to 0.08 mL/min."
- Stopping the reasoning one step short — ending at "the enzyme denatures" instead of reaching the measured outcome.
- Ignoring the experimental-design points — long FRQs love asking for the control, the independent or dependent variable, or how to improve the design. Easy, learnable marks.
- Predictions with no direction — "the result would be different" is not a claim.

What's the real difference between "explain" and "justify"?

Do you lose marks for a wrong statement on an AP FRQ?
