Here's how CBSE Class 10 Science diagram questions actually work, which ones to drill, and how to draw them so you don't leave marks on the table.
Why the diagram is the safest mark in the paper
A labelled diagram is the one question type where the examiner isn't judging your English, your handwriting speed, or how well you "understood" a concept. There's a fixed list of correct labels in the marking scheme, and if your label is on it, you get the mark. Full stop.
That's why NCERT packs the textbook with diagrams — the eye, the reflex arc, the nephron, the flower — and why they reappear year after year. The board wants to see that you can reproduce the textbook figure from memory. Not a prettier version. The textbook one.
And the marks are split. A two-mark diagram question is usually one mark for a correct drawing and one for correct labelling. On a three-marker it is often the drawing plus "any four correct labels". This split is the whole reason diagrams deserve priority: even a shaky drawing with the right labels banks most of the marks.
The diagrams that come back every single year
Keep a running list by chapter and practise these until you can draw each in under two minutes:
- Human eye and its defects (The Human Eye and the Colourful World) — the eye labelled with cornea, iris, pupil, ciliary muscles, eye lens, retina and optic nerve; plus ray diagrams for myopia (corrected with a concave lens) and hypermetropia (corrected with a convex lens).
- Reflex arc and the neuron (Control and Coordination) — the pathway through the spinal cord, and a single neuron with dendrite, cell body, axon and nerve ending.
- Life processes (Life Processes) — the nephron, the human heart, the digestive system, and a section showing stomata.
- Longitudinal section of a flower (How Do Organisms Reproduce) — stigma, style, ovary, ovule, anther and filament.
- Electric circuits and magnetism (Electricity; Magnetic Effects of Electric Current) — a circuit with a cell, key, rheostat, resistor, ammeter and voltmeter; magnetic field lines around a bar magnet and a solenoid.
- Ray diagrams (Light — Reflection and Refraction) — image formation by a concave mirror and by a convex lens.
- Chemistry apparatus and structures — the electrolysis of water set-up, and the soap micelle.

How CBSE actually marks a diagram
Three rules from the marking schemes that students never get told:
- The drawing and the labels are scored separately. You can lose the drawing mark and still keep the label marks, and the other way round. So always attempt both — never skip labelling because the drawing came out wrong.
- If a diagram is asked, it must be drawn. Describing the eye in words earns nothing on a "draw a labelled diagram" question. The examiner looks for a figure. No figure, no marks — however good the prose.
- Neatness and placement count. Pencil, straight label lines that don't cross each other, and each line touching the exact part. A label line pointing at the wrong structure is a wrong label.
Worked example: the reflex arc, step by step
"Draw a labelled diagram of a reflex arc" is a three-mark regular. Here's how I'd earn every mark.
Step 1 — Draw the stimulus and receptor. Sketch a hand near a flame or a pin. Mark the skin as the receptor.
Step 2 — Draw the spinal cord. A vertical cross-section on the other side, showing the inner grey matter (butterfly shape) and the outer white matter.
Step 3 — Sensory neuron in. Draw a nerve running from the receptor to the back of the spinal cord. Label it sensory (afferent) neuron.
Step 4 — Relay neuron. Inside the grey matter, draw the short relay neuron connecting the incoming and outgoing nerves.
Step 5 — Motor neuron out. Draw a nerve from the front of the spinal cord to the muscle. Label it motor (efferent) neuron.
Step 6 — Effector. Mark the arm muscle as the effector, and add small arrows showing the direction of the impulse — receptor first, muscle last.
Now map it to the marks: the drawing is one mark; the labelled pathway — receptor, sensory neuron, spinal cord with relay neuron, motor neuron, effector — carries the other two. Notice what the examiner is really checking: the message loops through the spinal cord, not the brain. That is why the response is so fast.
The three mistakes that cost the most marks
- Swapping the ammeter and voltmeter. The ammeter goes in series, in the main circuit; the voltmeter goes in parallel, across the component. Draw them the wrong way round and the circuit is wrong even if every symbol is neat.
- Ray diagrams with no arrows or only one ray. You need at least two rays to locate an image, each with an arrowhead showing direction. One ray locates nothing, and the image mark goes.
- Sloppy labels. Arrowheaded label lines, lines that cross, or misspellings like "cilliary" for ciliary. And watch the volumes in electrolysis of water: hydrogen collects at the cathode in double the volume of the oxygen at the anode, a 2:1 ratio (2H2O → 2H2 + O2). Get that ratio backwards and the label is wrong.

Yes. The drawing and the labels are marked independently of any explanation, so a correct labelled figure scores on its own. That is exactly why diagram questions are worth drilling.
Should I draw diagrams in pen or pencil?
Pencil. It lets you fix label lines and keeps the figure neat, which the marking scheme rewards. Label in pencil too, or switch to pen only once you're sure.
